The Statue of Liberty represents the promise of freedom and opportunity that America has provided to immigrants for generations. The emblem represents hope and welcomes newcomers to a land of freedom and possibilities. She faces outward, holding aloft the torch of freedom, the flame of hope, the promise of a future. She holds it high in daylight and at night, shining her light in the midst of darkness. Whilst our story takes place over a single day in 1917, the statue belongs to all people of all eras and her message is universal, speaking to the hearts of those who cherish freedom. Holding aloft a light that never fails, the Statue of Liberty represents hope for the hopeless, a welcome to the poor, courage to the meek. Her lamp is a beacon on stormy seas, drawing to America’s shores those from afar who seek a better life. For these, and countless others who embrace her message, she represents ‘the Golden Door’ – the entrance into liberty and freedom from oppression that is the promise by America: a new way of life. The Statue welcomes all to this door: the lost, the needy, the rejected, the exiled. She invites them to step through it into freedom.
