Musical

It is 1917. From the millions who passed through the doors on Ellis island, a 24-hour snapshot illustrates both the joy and the sorrow felt by a group of Immigrants who will contribute towards building a ‘new America’.

This is a new ensemble musical based on true events. With a list of infectious rock and ballad songs, we head back in time to Ellis Island. Neighbour to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island is the curiously ornate human warehouse processing immigrants on their way to the American Dream.

From January 1st 1892 until the early 1950s, Ellis Island, New York, took in a new wave of immigrants numbering some 12 million. THE GOLDEN DOOR is a snapshot of just one day on the island, where men, women, and children were tagged, physically and mentally examined, many torn from their families. The old and infirm, the ‘riff raff’, and those who looked insolent were consigned to a return voyage.

The theme for the musical was developed from personal recorded statements from immigrants who fled from war, displacement, religious persecution and famine in Europe. Some of their stories have been brought back to life in this musical.

The unfolding drama is one of romance, heartbreak, comedy and foreign intrigue, experienced by a handful of those immigrants whose lives become inescapably entwined as they confront their fears, beliefs, and expectations.

With its topical theme of immigration, a showcase of THE GOLDEN DOOR, with music, songs, and dialogue, was workshopped in London to great acclaim in October 2024. A concept album of 12 songs, orchestrated by John Cameron (Les Misérables) and backed by the London Musical Theatre Orchestra and singers from London’s West End, has recently been completed. Ben Forster was the first of our three soloists to record a song. The remaining two soloists TO BE CONFIRMED
